Anyone ever stuck a 292 on a ford O/D trans? are there adapters for that kinda thing? How well does a y-block fit in a shoebox anyway?
Check out Wilcap..they might be able to help...and I did get a motormount swap kit from butch's rod shop....But I heard a rumour they went south...Anybody can confirm this?
I was pretty certain that Ford trannies were the same from '49 to whenever they changed the bolt pattern in the sixties and that just the bellhousing patterns changed. I'd think you could just bolt a '49-'53 3-speed to the back of a Y-block bellhousing.
A standard Y-block bellhousing should just bolt up to the '49 tranny. You'll have to use a truck or T-bird pan with the rear sump in order to clear the front crossmember. Hurst used to make motor mounts for this swap, but unless you find a set on the 'net, you'll probably have to fab something. Stock Y-block exhaust manifolds should clear, at least they did on the last one I worked on, a '53 Merc. Most everything else should be pretty easy. warbird
ford trans bolt pattern is the same from 49- 64 but even most of the later trans had holes in the right place I have done a couple of 85 ish ford truck 3spd W/od to olds using an adapter from olds to 49-64 ford trans and I have one behind my Y block using the stock bell
RevHead, August '56 Car Craft did an article on putting a Y-Block in a 49-53 Ford. I haven't got a scanner but I can snail mail you a copy if you want. Basically they say you gotta section the oil filter (though they were using the huge original style one) and shorten the breather (if you have a lower one). They made a drop in the steering to clear the oil pan and moved the battery. Says there's no problem bolting ohv to 49-53 trans, but there are firewall issues. If you move the trans forward an inch you can still use the same drive shaft and not need to hack the firewall.
