What modern 4-5 speed ******s are out there that swap behind a y-block bell housing, either directly or with an adapter? And what other parts are needed to make it all work?

A t-5 will bolt to a p***enger car bellhousing with an adapter or to some of the truck bellhousings with modification.

See this site for more details; http://www.ford-y-block.com/index.html

A T-10 out of a 60's Ford should bolt right up, possibly a diff pilot bushing and clutch plate, Drive shaft length

Its not very modern but it would definitely work, the T-5 with overdrive will make it much nicer to drive on the highway.

Early top loaders (64) will bolt up with only a slight mod to the bearing retainer and cutting off about 3/8 off the nose of the input shaft. The early toploaders had the same bolt pattern as the Yblock trans. Second generation had both the same pattern and a wider pattern at the top.

If you look at the Mummerts and the Modern Driveline adapters they look the same. If I were to bet I would say they supply John with his. I have'nt used one just yet but it is on my to do list.

How about one of the toploader imposters found in a Granada, the one that has an overdrive for 4th gear. Should bolt in just like the earlier 60's style toploader.

I always thought the biggest perc of an OD was to be able to run a lower gear in the rear, giving you better acceleration in the lower gears, as opposed to better highway mileage.. Run a wide ratio 4 speed with a taller gear in back and probably have the best of both worlds. Ebay is full of T-10 from cheap to a lot, from used to total rebuilds.

    Great info here.
If I may take this another direction for just a bit, does anyone know roughly the cost difference of a manual (t5 plus bellhousing, clutch, pedal ***embly, etc) vs an AOD or similar automatic swap? I would be installing on my 239 that is still running strong, but ford-o-matic is now leaking bad.
