Well, here we go again with a simple question I probably have the answer for, just want several opinions. I've been working the old '59 F-100 over, new brakes,(Complete) clutch, pressure plate, T.O.& pilot bearing, resurfaced f.w., tuneup, changed the rear gear, again, ( a wore out 292 will not pull itself with 275 rear gears, 3.25's work much better). My 3 on the tree is very tired. Don't know why I didn't look at a 5-spd from the git go! If my calcs are correct, 3.25's in 4th would be pretty close to 3.50's in 5th. Best of both worlds! Here is the question. What 5-spd will hold up the best under light duty conditions? What is the easiest trans to make fit? Will the mustang/S-10 trans do the job? Is there a 5-speed from some other ford p.u. that will adapt easily? I machined out an aluminum spacer for my '56 to adapt a S-10 5spd in it. Will I just copy that? I see on Mr. Mummerts website he has modified bell housing. What trans goes with that? I'm going to use this truck as a daily, 62 miles round trip to work on highway, (65 mph) conditions. I'm currently gathering the remaining parts to "hot rod" my 292. I'll just be camming it with "G" heads, 1:54 rockers and ram horn exhaust, nothing wild just a simple little junk yard built motor. Sorry for all the stupid ass questions lately, I search and don't get the answers I'm looking for and get discouraged. Maybe one of the Y-block guys here can answer my questions. Thanks in advance Fenderless
I have a T-5 behind mine, it's out of a Turbo 4 cyl. '88 T-bird and works great. You can go for a V8 tranny for more money but I think for a daily driver the 4 cyl. one works fine. I have 3.50 gears and cruise very comfortably at 70 mph and 2500 rpm on 26" tires. I did my own mods to the bell and if you have a three speed now you already have the right one to work with. I don't do it all the time but this tranny holds up to some good burn outs and hauls my camper around too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28gtzOJdHqg
