Guys, was wondering what different year bellhousings and flywheels will mate up to a 312 Y-block without modifications? The engine is in my 55 crown and I've had the car since this past september and really just dont like the ford o matic trans, it's almost boring to drive. My father has a toploader that will be donated but I have no clue where to find the other parts needed or what exactly will work. And carlisle swap meet is still 2 months away. Has anyone done anything similar or know of a website where I could get some good info?
If you are going to standard shift any car bellhousing flywheel made from 1954 to 1962 if it is from a 272,292 or 312. You will have to trim the imput shaft on a toploader it is longer than the gear cruncher trans that were original to most Y blocks. you also will need to find clutch pedal and linkage fron a 55 or 56. and a floor shifter or the std shift collum parts fron a 55. There are adapters to mate a c4 auto to Y blocks. Old Wolf
hey, the toploader will not bolt up to the factory belhousing. the toploader had the mounting points that are out board, the y block belhousings are inboard. a super t10 ford 4spd will mount up to it. all of the flywheels are the same from 54 till 62 in cars, providing they are y blocks , trucks are the same till 64. they kept the y block till 64 in trucks. belhousings are the same aslong as its a y block.
Some Yblock bell housings have a dual pattern. I've used the course spline toploaders and only needed to turn down the input shaft housing, or open up the hole for ot in the housing. I've also used the T-10, same mods needed, but the clutch disc was fine spline, so i couldn't use the stock one from the Y block. The flathead, Yblock, and big block FE's used the same course spline for the clutch. The Yblock flywheels had 3 sets of holes, a 10, 10 1/2, and 11" for the pressure plate. If you are going to run a hot motor, the toploader and an 11" clutch is the hot ticket. If it's basically stock, the T-10 and a smaller clutch is fine. I know there are a lot of different opinions on this, but this has worked for me on MANY 57's, but glad to see yoiu're keeping the Y in it.
I put a toploader in back of my 312. The first thing you have to do is get all the stick parts - linkage, brackets, etc from a stick car. 55 and 56 are the same, a lot of the 54 stuff also works. Use the Z or cross bar off a 55 or 56 though. Toploaders came in 3 mounting bolt configurations. The very early ones (64) had the same bolt pattern as the YBlock (I got one of these). The 2nd setup had four holes at the top, one set of which is the same as the Y. The bottom holes were the same as the Y. The 3rd set up had two holes at the top, which were wider than the Y. However, there is supposed to be enough meat for you to drill the correct holes. Bottom holes on this set up is the same as the Y. The above is for the "everyday" toploaders. There is a heavy duty version (427 and 428) that had bigger input and out put shafts. Not sure on the bolt patterns for these, but probably had the last version. There are a number of tailshafts which had different mounting points for the shifter. The 64 Falcon had its shifter mounting point right after the main case and the shifter should clear the seat. Hurst has a shifter for this. This is what I have in my 54. The Falcon tailshafts may be hard to find, but I think David Kee reproduces them. The guys above are correct about the front bearing retainer and input shaft. The input shaft is about 3/8 too long ( measure before you cut) and the retainer must be cut down a sconch. I went with the 11 inch clutch (modified 312).
First off, sorry to hijack! I have a 292 Y-bloc, from a 56 Merc. I ALSO have a line on a Borg Warner T10, from a 65-66 Shelby GT500. Are you guys saying that I do NOT need to buy this kit? http://www.transmissionadapters.com/ford_y_block.htm $850 is a LOT of $$$ Anyone got a link on HOW TO? Thanks, an sorry to hijack again.
