Y-Block Upgrades

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by TexasHardcore, Jul 10, 2008.

  1. I just got some off of Ebay. $233.00. Need a lot of cleanin' though. One set on there just sold for $275 on a "Buy it now" price of $300. They are expensive but in my opinion can't be beat. Offys look pretty good and are cheaper but there's just nothing like 'bird v-covers ..

  2. As long as we're on the subject of "Y" blocks...does $2000.00 seem out of line for a 292 re-build?

    That's for parts and labor?

That doesn't sound like too bad a price, if the guy actually knows Y-blocks. The Y-blocks have a few little tricks to them that can cause trouble if the engine builder doesn't do their homework- switched intake manifold bolts bend pushrods, switched head bolts crack blocks, the timing marks are different than most other engines ... etc. etc.

have all of those items in my 32 cpe engine, except have a .040 overbore. ran 6 carbs last year, now am running 3 carbs and am tickled with the way it performs. think you will too.posted a few pics a month or so back.

  5. I just think there will be a certain pride of ownership to have an all-original car. I thought about up-grading, but figured the cost would be more than re-building. I can't help but think that when this car was engineered in the 50's all these parts were meant to work together. It's kind of a "zen thing". I guess I'm in this thing all the way now!

No it doesn't. Machine work for a thorough job can easily run $2000 all by itself not including parts.

Here is a typical 'complete' rebuild machining task list for a high quality rebuild.

Hot tank, spraywash or bake and blast - typically runs 40-80 for block and another 40 for heads.
Bore/hone block (with deck plates, if available) - 200
Machining block deck surfaces - 80 (40 per)
'Squaring' the block decks to the crank centeline and/or zero decking block. 80-120 plus initial decking costs
Machine block or intake manifold for proper fit 40-60.
    Align hone mains - 150
    grind+polish crank - 150+
rebuild big ends of rods - 120
    bush/rebush small ends of rods - 80-120
    balance rotating assembly - 200
    file-fit piston rings - 200
Machine head deck surfaces - 80 (40 per)
    install 16 bronze valve guides - 80
    machine for PC/viton seals - 80
3 angle valve job - 150 (more $ for 5 angle valve job and/or bowl blend)
Machine heads for larger dia valve springs and/or adjust installed height 80-120
Basic assembly fee - 500 (typical SBC/SBF "street build" assembly, race motors and others types are more $)

Not all motors are gonna need everything listed, however, you can see it really adds up quick. There's lot to a good rebuild and a good rebuild can easily run well into the 3000-5000+ range when you start buying high quality parts. If your looking to go fast reliably your looking at even more money.

Nope. I spent $1000 on my 113 heads (that includes purchase price), that was for machining and modifying.

Thanks... I'll have to check those out.

  9. someone told me the Reds look like old Headman design. But smallest diameter I saw for them is 1 3/4" Does anyone make 1 5/8" headers for Y-blocks?

  11. Does anyone have plans for a low-cost engine stand/cart to keep a "Y" off the floor until ready to put back in car?

Whats the word on the 5750-471 heads? Are they comparable to the 5752-113's? I can't find a horsepower rating on mummerts site.

1.75" headers are a bit extreme for a small inch motor, why would they even consider that for a Y-Block?

Langy, ya'll got some cool shit there, are your prices in USD or AUS?

  16. yeah, that's what I was told about the 1.75" pipes too but it's the smallest I've seen available for the 292 tho'. Any idea where to get something smaller?

I am running a 312 + .040 for 320. Unposted 57 big valve heads with 1.94 and 1.6 chev +200 valves in hard seats on the exhaust. I use an Isky 270 adv. cam. My car is about 3400 pounds, so your wilder cam will still come out of the hole like gang busters. I just switched from a reworked 57 intake to a Blue Thunder, and went up from 500 Edelbrock to a 600. What you have planned will be a fast, fun car, drive it in good health.

According to Mummerts site, these are rated at 210 hp on the Mercury engine. Which he says is rated at 8.7 compression ratio compared to the Ford version of 8.0, both with a 2BBL carb. I would guess that the hp would be very close to the Mercury rating of 210. The 113's only have 72cc compared to the 471's 82cc. If that helps you or not.

IIRC they used Y block cranks in Windsors to get a cheap forging?
Anyone ever read of using SBF parts in a Y?
    Like the 400C 4.00" crank...?
