No, but we hope to work out of one soon. Strange Days is moving out of the old shop and will soon relocate into this new barn themed shop. Its designed to look like a vintage barn with a three story silo. The barn will contain the shop, living quarters and a drive under garage. The first pic is of the basic building framed. In all there's about 6,000sq ft under roof. We're doing all the work ourselves , so things are moving kinda slow. If you look closely you can see the silo on the right. Here's a view of the silo with the roof on the ground. We'll crane it into place atop the silo on completion, The silo will have a stone exterior. The drive under garage door is to the lower right, Here's a view of the silo lid trusswork... 32 sections. Finally a view from inside the third floor of the silo We.ve been bustin our hump to get this thing up before the snow flies... Wish us luck!
That wood spoke wheel is huge! I pipe dream of building a straw bale house in clerestory barn fashion. A garage on the ground level, living space on the first story, and loft style bedrooms in the clerestory. And, a chain hoist hanging from the top roof beam with hay doors on each story to get stuff up and in.
Chaz, I remember when you and I talked about this quite a while back, very cool to see it happening. How many builds/remodels does this one make? I've know you through at least 3. (And thanks once again for making me feel like a lazy slacker... damn man do you ever sleep.) I got my wonderful wife to sign off on this, yea man! no more traditional houses for us! Once our son leaves for the Navy and a couple other milestones are passed (hey that didn't sound quite right). Its a kit and we will obviously have to sell our current house to finance it. After talking with a couple owners in CO, I've been advised to have a small separate welding/painting/blasting building to keep the fumes from taking over the living space and use the big space for "clean-ish" work. I had thought a big set of commercial fans would do it but one of the owners I talked with said even with dedicated fans the fumes from his metal fabrication/rought iron hobby shop ruined the furniture and beds within 4 months after moving in (pissed off his wife).
I've been thinking about stuff like this a lot lately for some reason....great to get some more ideas, even if I'm proabably 10-20 years out from being able to do anything about them! Very cool Chaz and crew...can't wait to see more!
There's gotta be a way of dealing with that. My first thought was how about using one of the watchtowers to vent fumes, it being a chimney from the boxed-in fume room in the garage area?
That is as cool as it gets. Love the silo look. Admire your hard work and insightful design. Good Luck gang. ~Sololobo~
Believe it or not, there's a separate 6 bay garage on the property, so I can separate the super dusty smelly work from the barn proper. We've lived at the same address for almost 30 years. so this move to the "barn" is going to be an interesting change. The shop and residence portions of the barn have two totally different funaces so there is no crossover of odors or dust, but I wont really know how this'll work till we move in.
Chaz, one day I will also build a "dirty room" out back. 2-3 stalls is all I will need. getting ready to make a mess cutting steel in the shop, Carla will cringe when she smells it, that is a unique smell!
Yeah, Tman I know what you mean. There are certain shop odors that my wife cant stand... She's pretty preppy and isnt into car stuff. She loves the smell of lacquer and bondo though.
