Well thanks to the far-reaching tenacles if the HAMB, here's what I got today, 29 A Sports Coupe (thanks Rick!). Not quite what I was after, but the price was right and it has some cool original paint. My question is this; what's the best way to go about making this thing look like a hardtop coupe? A whole new roof section? Weld it up and find a window insert? Anyone done this before? Viva la HAMB!!! [IMG]
PS...does that look like an old push bar on the rear? Maybe it was a race car in another life...

the car isnt actully a sport coupe it would be known as a leather back coupe, the sport coupe had no quarter windows and no metal around the back, just a cloth unremovable top,

my budy had one and he ended up finding a normal coupe roof back panel for his, he also on the hamb (full blast),

me presonaly to cut down on cost id weld up the wholes and fid the back window opening out of a sedan and weld that in

god i like seeing fresh vintage tin!

Are the sedan rear windows the exact same size as the coupe?

You are close leather backs where 4 door sedans thats what they call a special coupe. The back windows are the same, but I like the idea of finding a coupe top that got wacked off to make a roadster. Cool car nun the less....Danny

Iv got the same deal going on, Iv got a 28 sports coupe that some one has tacked a roof on to. The rear window is hand made, and looks ****, Iv got a sedan back panel that I’m going to use, unfortunately the sedan panel has been chopped so I guess I’m just going to have to chop the coupe to match.
I may do it this weekend, if I do ill post some pictures

The sedan back panels aren't exactly the same size, but will work just fine with a little t*******. Even better if you aren't going to worry about the stock seam beads up the back of the roof. The window is in a slightly different position (higher or lower), but I think it's even better than a stock coupe, vision wise. My brother did this exact swap. The molding around the beltline will be the hardest part to make look right.

  17. I've got the upper half of the back of my 31 pick up. I'll have to check if the widow area is good.

  18. A 28/29 leather back coupe is pretty darn rare. I read
somewhere a while ago less than 1000 made. Why not try to
swap with a restorer for a standard coupe. You never know!!

I'm not so sure about the rare stuff.

The deal was Ford started out making one kind, switched to the other, then towards the end of production they went back to the first kind. Now, which was first, leather or steel, I can't remember.

I've seen quite a few leather backs, so I wouldn't call them rare. Maybe only slightly rarer than the steel backs, but that is probably because they rotted away quicker.

chop it and put an original style leather roof on it. that would be different and could look good if you did it right.

According to the restorers parts book, the 'gl*** rear window surrounds are the same for coupe and sedan.

If req'd email me and i'll go around to my mate's place and put my coupe window surround onto his tudor and check it once and for all.

    cheers

That looks like a good body. I am building the same car myself and so is a friend of mine in Kelowna. Neither cars have rear windows yet. The original wood kit for these cars is expensive. One word of advice is do not put a roof from a 30 coupe on the car, they are close, but they don't fit. The rear window section could be made to fit though. I have a 30 coupe rear window panel that I am going to weld into my car.
