There are places in Texas and the rest of the counrtry, where the police and the judges and the local politicos are in cahoots, yep, you guessed it, for the money! So just do like the old Doc tells you; "bend over and spread em!"  :(

Initially you said you were stopped at a light.....

you also said that you were on your way back to work...not "cruisin the strip"....

Just for shits and giggles...How much is this ticket supposed to cost anyway?

I agree completely! I lost my license 3 times for speeding and running stoplights, and deserved every ticket. Hell, I probably deserved 10 times as many tickets as I got!

But then one day 25 years ago, I saw someone else driving like a dick, I thought to myself 'That guy's driving like an asshole; that guy drives like me!'

From that point on, I made an effort not to be an asshole when I drive, and you know what? I've never gotten another ticket.

Sometimes you make your own luck.

So, quit bitchin...take the stupid plugs "out", drive to the CHP or Sherrif's, get it signed, pay the fine, and move on. Your exhaust is modified. Just because it doesn't say anything about spark plugs in your citation doesn't matter. Don't waste your time in court...you'll lose, possibly pay more of a fine, and still have to take the stupid plugs out.

wait a minute...everyone is saying "your exhaust is modified...pay the ticket" WTF...the way I read the statute it says you cannot modify the exhaust to excede certain sound levels...therefore a modified exhaust is allowed as long as it isn't too loud. Like it was said before...every car on the road that has had a new exhaust system bent up at a muffler shop is "modified" over stock.
You got pulled over for rapping your pipes...last I heard that was not illegal unless maybe you have straight pipes ...I think you said your exhaust is under the legal limit for noise..if it really is then fight the ticket. Fuck laying down and rolling over for the bastards...as for spark plugs in the exhaust I would pull them out...just in case.

wait a minute, you said if it's louder than factory that automatically makes it a violation of law?
that's unconstitutional. they have to make a clear noise level to make a charge, like a certain decibel. if you're right, then my god, that's fucked up.

I've been through this twice, first time not good experience second time it was cool. The first time policeman pulled me over and told me that he could stand here all night and pick my car apart. I politely asked him what was wrong, he said the exhaust was too loud, 2 1/4 duals w/glasspacks. I politely told him that it was factory exhaust and was all welded up, no clamps=no leaks. He wrote me a warning to get my tailights fixed, fuse blew when I was leaving from work. Second time was totally my fault. I just got done changing the jets in my holley for my 383. I went down into town to get a hoagie I ordered. I turned around in the bank parking lot and pulled back out onto street and hammered it in low, got up to 5 grand shifted into second then left off shifted to drive. At the time I didn't realize I had passed a policeman going the opposite way. I got to my house to pull up my driveway, I noticed policeman behind me. I pulled up my driveway and parked my car under the leantoo. I looked behind me to see policeman pulling up behind me, flashed lights on then off. I thought it was the local town policeman, whom I know. Boy was I wrong, it was a STATE POLICEMAN! First he asked me if I knew what the speed limit was, I said 35. He said that I wasn't doing 35 and wished he knew what I was doing, didn't clock me. Then he asked me what for exhaust I had on the car, I said dual 2 1/2" with flowmasters. He said he didn't know what the decible rate was and didn't have the meter with him but the said he was going to find out. He politely told me to take it out on a back road if I was to do that again. I thanked him, shook his and told him to have a nice day. Now I don't want to start any shit but some of you are saying that if you change it it's modified. Why is it when you open up Summit,Speedway,Jeggs, etc. that you find cat back systems made by all the exhaust manufacturers for a wide range of vehicles? Is this a conspiricy between the legal system and the aftermarket? I don't understand that. You can't tell me a Flowmaster muffler is going to have the same "tone" as a stock muffler. Do you guy's see where I'm coming from? This is just my opinion on it and sometimes that don't mean jack.:D later shawn

Look, the guy has glasspacks on his car. The cop was behind him. He reved it up to show off for his buddy.

I have been involved in a few "muffler rapping" contests at car shows. You line up the cars with the exhaust facing the crowd so they get the best sound. Often the sound level is higher from behind a car then it is in the car. Since the cop was behind him, the cop got the best sound. He didn't know the cop was back there and was likely giving his buddy the best "muffler rap" he could. Anyone with a pair of glasspacks knows what RPM the pipes sound the best.

I'm going to say it again. Pay the damn ticket and move on. Gene

Yea...go ahead and pay the damn ticket...don't matter if you are right or wrong....hell may as well admit to a couple of unsolved murders in town and help the cops clear that shit up too....I mean after all why have any rights anymore?? Wouldn't want to ever get fucked with by a man with a badge again so don't take any chances...maybe you should go give the whole force BJs so they will leave ya alone too..........
If you are legal then fight it...if you are above the legal limit...then pay it.

  14. Is this a ticket that you have to pay them some dinero or just a fix-it ticket?

I've had fix-it tickets for excessive engine noise which sounds
(no pun intended) real close to what you got tagged for.

If it's a fix-it type you should be able to just get it signed of my a Cop you know.

  15. california law has no provisions for modified "looking" exhaust only sound des. plus on new cars you don't need ANYTHING after the last o2 sensor (obdII which is right behind the cat) or the cat (obdI) as long as the noise level is within spec. i said it once i'll say it again.................

IF YOU LIVE IN CALIFORNIA BUY A VEHICLE CODE BOOK.
$3.00 at the dmv or sometimes you can get the previous year for free.

At the risk of letting Reason get in the way of my hatred of authority figures, I'll say this: It's not about whether you can weasel your way out. It's about being a man and admitting you were showing your ass by paying the ticket.

It's clear from the first post that you were in the wrong. You should be pissed at yourself instead of at the overzealous cop. Stop being a crybaby about it and do the right thing and pay the stupid ticket. Next time look around before you rap your glasspacks.

  17. you really can't have the flamethrowers legally. but 27151 says you can't modify the exhaust to emit more noise then your year can emit. 27150 says you need an adequate muffler and cannot have cutouts.

    27204 gives a desible limit:
over 6000 gvwr (gross vehicle weight)
after 1967 and before 1973 is 88 dbA
after 1972 and before 1975 is 86 dbA
after 1974 and before 1978 is 83 dbA

    over 8500 gvwr
after 1977 and before 1982 is 83 dbA

by the way to answer some other statements on this thread, fix it tickets are now $10 plus you have to have them signed off and court doesn't cost anything in california (for traffic tickets).

thanks for showing the decible limits...but where would a person get the decibles checked and at what RPM do they check it?? All the way through?
It's not about "being a man" and "showin yer ass" its about being within the limits of the law and being harrassed by some prick with a badge.Rapping the pipes is not illegal...within decible levels so why pay the state more of your hard earned cash? They take enough through legal taxation that they really don't need more through bullshit tickets.

Radio shack has meters. buy one, check it, take it to court then return it. Some bands have them also for setups.

I got pulled over on my bike, Harley with drag pipes and baffles. Cop was on a Harley and took my info. After a few minutes of saying nothing he told me he was going to write me a ticket for no mufflers. I told him I had baffles. He then informed me that the law said mufflers, not baffles, and mufflers got big at the end like the ones on his bike. I was polite and told him I tought I was legal but he should do whatever he had to do. [ Well actually the law says "Muffler or muffling device" but I decided not to pursue that route and piss him off. I didn't want to go to jail and have my bike towed.] Cop, "Ya say this things got bafflles huh? "and took his billyclub and stuck in the pipe hitting a baffle. After a few more minutes he asked "Mr. Brown, can you aford a $55 muffler ticket?' I replied, "If I don't get a $55 muffler ticket, I can aford to buy some mufflers." He tried to hide a small grin and let me go. He did tell me to take it straight home and not take it out till I had mufflers. I did put mufflers on it, but thats another story.

    EXACTLY

if it is within the noise limits and you know it, fight it

  23. They get paid to go to court around here, they love it! No domestic violence cases to check out. They sit in a row in the back of the courtroom and talk until they get called up. I'm sure they leave afterwards and have a nice lunch together.

When it comes down to our word against theirs, the guy in the uniform (who the judge is familiar with because he see's them in the courtroom often enough) is believed.

I do believe you have a case, he has no proof or paperwork for his claim. have lot's of pictures and copies of the laws pertaining to exhaust mods.

Manz .... FIRST ---police get PAID to go to court....AT LEAST time and a half...a LOT of states are DOUBLE TIME !!! And they get paid "portal to portal" ...this means as soon as they walk out thier door until they walk back in thier door so they DON'T mind having "court duty' AT ALL !!.....SECOND ..... a flamethrower set-up is ILLEGAL in ALL states !!! yer gonna' LOSE man .... If he wanted to he could have IMPOUNDED the car for those flamethrowers !! I'd just pay the ticket and save yourself TIME ( You WILL be LAST in line...) and grief ..... ain't fair but that's how IT IS !! Good luck and take a lawyer if yer gonn' fight it .....

    jeraey Skip
PS... been there --done that ....

  25. im sorry but your wrong. You can have a flame kit all damn day. As long as it is not set off on public streets its legal. Its just like having NOS in a Civic. You can have it in the car but just not the bottle attached. So it doesnt matter about that. Im going to pull the plugs, have it signed off. Its 10$. If he wrote me up for the xhaust being to loud then i would fight it. But he just wantes the plugs out. I will take them out, get it singed off, and put them right back in.

Ok, what percentage of states/towns have laws against loud exhaust, or against the "illegal squealing of tires". In Elgin, Illinois, where I was born and raised, and learned to drive. I learned the hard way that even taking a corner too fast and having your tires squeal is reason for a $75 ticket. A local ordinance states that no vehicle may emit any noises from the tires unless doing so to avoid an accident, or if the noise comes from a police officers vehicle while in "pursuit" of a speeding vehicle. As for exhaust, in my college town, of Greenville, NC, half of the cars ran straight pipes. No mufflers, no resonators, no glass packs, just straight friggin pipes. I never saw anybody get a ticket for it. In fact, some of the cop cars were running side pipes or cutouts with turndowns. What kinda shit is that?

Pay the ticket, the cops going to show up, more than likely he knows the judge, he's been there before. You were showing off, you got caught. that's the sensible advise, now if you go to court be prepared you get to question the cop, make sure you have down what your going to ask, don't get personal, but be ready to lose. Keep us posted on the outcome.
