My '33 Willys coupe. I have a collection of hot rods and racers of different colors - each of a different color - but yellow is my favorite. I have never had a green hot rod. My current ('49 Anglia) build will be green.

    Enjoy

    Hello,

Taking photographs of hot rods/customs and custom motorcycles always presented an excitement like opening the first present on Christmas morning. Yes, we saw the hot rods at a picnic, car show or rod run first. Then we made contact and set up a photo shoot a week later in the the owner’s choice of places and/or one that I knew locally.

At the time, it did not matter how far away the location is/was. My wife and I made it an extended vacation with added benefits of a nice photo shoot set up or two. As far as going to Santa Barbara many times in a month, what is not to like in Santa Barbara and the surrounding locales?

When we first saw different hot rods at a car show/rod run, we were introduced to a classic guy, well known locally in the Santa Barbara/Goleta area as an upholstery/custom hot rod builder. Ken Perry of Big Hearted Ken’s Nostalgia Center was a little quirky, but he knew his hot rod stuff and with his upholstery shop, it was just the cherry on top situation.

He introduced us to several hot rod owners and cars. He also invited us back the following week to see his latest project he just started. We lived over 160 miles away in south Orange County, but I knew a great story when I see or hear of one. This was a classic story of a ground up Phaeton build with an unusual one of a kind custom top.

So, my wife and I arranged for several mini vacations to come up to Santa Barbara and Goleta for some pre-build photos. It was ok to drive 3 hours up and 3 hours back as we stopped in Long Beach to visit my parents several times. Also, my brother lived in Santa Barbara at the time and a visit or two was always in the books.

The yellow 1934 Phaeton was one of the best looking hot rods at the time. It was the grand jackpot for me as the magazine selected it for a cover shot, if I could get a good shot and interesting background.

We really wanted the center spread, but who likes their cars with a line down the middle and a couple of staples to boot?

As a writer and married to an English major in college, how could one not write a continuing story for a different aspect of the hot rod Phaeton? The editors wanted a run down of the building of the “California Top,” a new Carson style creation from Big Hearted Ken and show the stages of the build. It was one of the most fun assignments we ever planned for several months.

There was so much to do and see in the whole Santa Barbara area that we never got tired of weekends and weekdays in paradise. Even the coastal drive was as pristine as it could be.

So, did the “ends justify the means?” Yes, it did, in more ways than one. The rewards were getting to see the build, the photos, the scenery and meeting new hot rod people in a fabulous location. Taking your wife out to dinner every night always brought a nice way to end the hectic photo shoot days. For the magazine people, it was just another story for their readers, but from sunny So Cal.

Frenchtown that 33 next to you is Bruce Brietensteen sp. He came from NY, real nice guy. I can add a few of his car when he was still in NY, he moved south. Here's one of my 62 Corvette after I sold it and Bruces car at the Mills Mansion show in NY about 5 yrs ago.
