the shop i work out of was originally started in the 20's or 30's.....and like most ...added on to a couple times....my section was added in the 60's i think ....maybe early 70's....the original portion is long gone ....but my father in law has a picture of it somewhere....small building with a couple pumps....i've been looking at a building thats for sale in my area....it was a old station back in the 40's....was also a store and a creamery....neat place.....still has the covered area over where the pumps were....on hwy 25....a couple hundred feet is the local bar which was also a motel .....a lot of history on 25....but sorta passed by once 75 went in.....brandon

  2. I was glad to see pictures of the "bomber-gas" filling station from Millwaukee Or. on this thread. I remember going in there with my folks on a trip to Cali. on old highway 99 {now I-5} I thought that was the coolest thing. I was 6-7 yrs old and that stop is all I really remember about that trip. When I rebuild my garage I want to add an overhang to the front side of it to park under. Maybe some wooden cut-outs of old time gas pumps too.

my family used to have an old pump next to the garage in the 50s. how illegal would that be now a days haha. i took the pump of the tank and the electrical; and the next day my dad ran it over with the tractor.... i was pissed at him for years!>=( i still have the faceplate though.

  7. So whos taken this one step beyond and made their garage or shop look like an old school filling station???

Here's one my dad ran in Olive Hill,KY at one time. Known as CAMP 60 it had gas pumps, restauraunt and travel court. These are postcards I've bought that show how it looked back in the late 40s and early 50s. Those days it was on US Highway 60, later the government moved the road.

Last year I thought it wise to get some current shots to show how it looks today. It's now a residental dwelling and the cabins have fallen into disrepair. One or two have survived to be used as storage.

I've never really thought that owning a motel would be my cup of tea, but as I get older the thought of having a retro style auto court with a gas station as part of the business sounds more and more appealing.

WELL SHIT!! I just spent 20 minutes typing something out...--->INFO, and some how deleted it before I posted it...FUCK!!!, I can't type so here it goes again!!!!!
    .
    .
. Just for Info, and someone may have already wrote this in, I didn't read all the pages, mostly because of the depression this post brought!!! (NOT because of the subject, but because of what I went thru!) ANYWAYS... here goes, AGAIN.... Be sure to check into -ALL- (underground tanks, fuel leaks, old gas lines underground, ETC.) areas if you are thinking about buying an old gas/service station.... I was in the process of doing this, and because I was going to purchase this on a credit card, (because the interest was lower) the normal title insurance, ownership checks and lawyers didn't get involved, BUT anyways, this is the point:..... most stations are out of business (at least around here) because the owners didn't remove the undergound tanks from the property. So if YOU were to purchase this property ...Y O U...and only... Y O U ...are responsible to remove those tanks, clean up leaks, remove lines, etc. BEFORE you can do anything!!!! I got lucky and found out at the last minute, as the normal "DISCLOSURE" paper-work does NOT ask if there are undergound tanks. So you could buy the property NOT KNOWING the tanks and other problems are there!!!! Unless you go to your court house fill out a form and get the correct form ; I can't remember exactly what it is called, but it is basically a property history report, to see if tanks and other things are still undergound!!! like I said maybe this is a repeat of something already said, and I am sorry if it is, BUT I just don't want someone to go thru the hassle I did!!!! besides THE LET DOWN IS TREMENDOUS!!!!!! KEN

  13. I had this place for a while until My partner moved out...!

It was built in 1927 and the Main beam was set the Very day that Lindburg landed in Paris...!

This vintage gas station located close to Pewaukee Lake

Three Large bays and an office with an additional 2 bays on the side. It has 2 restrooms!

Soon this will be leveled and turned into a "McMansion"!

It was a "Cool Place"... hate to see it go...!

  14. That's the "Tower Conoco"...I was by there a couple years ago it was recently repainted seafoam green....Nice Cafe across street too!

Here's an old Gulf station I've visited a few times in Bedford Pa. I have pics of it, but can't find them, so I finally found this small one on the net. This is an original Art deco style station from the 30's, and is still operating. If your ever passing through Bedford, stop there, it's all tile and really beautiful, if your into old stations, it's a must see. Here's a link

Love this post! There is a cool Flying A right in Monrovia off of Shamrock that is a cool $1.2 mil. It has a bing shop in the back as well as its gas pumps out front. I think an aqauintance of mine is gonna step up to buy it. It would make for a bitchen shop for me, but no such cash in my hand. I believe that it was constructed in the late 20's or early 30's. 4A375CDC-89B7-4F24-91BC-94A75AF4193B.jpeg I drove by yesterday and it was still looking rather cool!.(12 Years later I was finally able to load a picture ;) ).

I love old gas stations. These are some photos from a couple of weeks ago with some buddies. We did a drive to the Gilmore Museum in Kalamazoo. These Porsches are all pre-1974, referred to as Early 911s.

  20. Thanks for putting the pictures up! I have seen pictures of that same station once - but - I had no clue where it even was, thanks to you I do now. Question, was this taken apart and rebuilt at that museum site or was the museum site built around the existing gas station?:D

It was rebuilt at the museum site. It is really quite a unique museum. There are several barns - all of which were moved to the site - filled with all sorts of different cars. Definitely worth a visit if you're ever in the area!

:) Wonderful topic. I am still trying to figure out how to post some of my photos and will follow up soon but here is my first hand account to yesteryears filling stations.

I was born into the garage sene and lived through the days of my family eating meals in my mothers adjoining restaurant and only having the public restroom to use until my 5th grade year. You bet they were the cleanest restrooms in East Kentucky.

Thank God my ol man was a good enough wrench to expand the property.

O'yea I'm still opening the doors at the same location 43 years later.
