My small block Chevy fuel pump died suddenly while going down the road. It sounds like there are some broken pieces rattling inside it when you shake it. It was a Carter/CarQuest part number M4685 / 160572. It lasted about 2 years, and 18,000 miles. Advance Auto advertises a limited lifetime warranty on this pump, but when I tried to get it replaced, the store manager told me that they cannot warranty any fuel pumps more than 45 days old. I see that RockAuto sells this very same pump for $14. They must be manufacturing these things for about $5 apiece. No wonder they don't last.

I wonder if it's constructed like one had fail a couple years ago. Instead of the bakelite disc valves and light springs, this POS had a large plastic cup or saucer inside (kind of like a 2-1/2" diameter frost plug), with two umbrella seals installed on that cup.
One of the umbrellas seals became a bit wavy, preventing it from sealing.

I cut it open after it failed out of curiosity and that's how I found out how it was built.

  3. My first autozone one lasted about a year. The second one has been on there for at least 6 or 7.
I just kept an extra one handy.

Sounds like the difference between a "Limited Lifetime" and an "Unlimited Lifetime" warranty. :(

Fuel pumps are a **** shoot these day’s. Even the good ones. That’s why I won’t suggest any said pump to anyone anymore.

The warranty is limited to the lifetime of the part and dies with it. I'd go online and read what corporate has to say not the local store guy.
