Here is where I am at. I am not paying cash for this car. I don't have the cash to buy the car much less any project that is in any kind of decent shape. What I do have is a late model truck that is fully custom that the dude is interested in. My truck is not going to be the easiest to sell when it does come time. It is going to take a special person that wants this particular truck. Most people selling a 50s car are not going to be even in the ballpark for a trade with my truck so I can't just go find the car I want and trade someone for it. And if I did sell my truck for cash then I would probably buy myself a different car that is more of a project. But the situation being the way it is, if I can make a deal with the guy and it is fair then I am OK getting into a car that I can leave alone for a while and do my custom thing later on down the road. I don't have the money to dump into a project so buying a turn key car that is the next project I want to do that I can enjoy for a while as is would be a nice step into the classic world I would think.

What I think I am going to do is gather some examples of other cars like the one posted above and offer him up 10K an see if work the deal around his car being worth that much. If he doesn't like that then I walk away.

    Thanks,
    Chad

Do not let peoples opinion talk you out of something that works for you.It sounds to me like a car like that one fits your needs at present. You could always sell it down the road for a bit more money.I would shop the classifieds for wheels I bought a nice set of astros with tires for 400 dollars. You could sell the daytons for 500 or so with tires.Do what you want, your the one that has to live with the decision.

so far from what I have found there are a lot on the market for around 10-12K in what I can tell would be the same condition. I have requested some better pictures of the interior, trunk and engine. So that will help with all this too.

If it had the three speed tranny or had a 350/350 combo then i'd say around that... But like everyone else is saying. if that is exactly what you want buy it. If you are going to change it then don't unless you can get him to where you still have the money to change what you were going to change. That's just how I look at it.

I love these posts. show a couple of pics of a car along with minimal details and ask what it is worth to people from all over the world. then people chime in that it is overpriced. you could put that same car here for $9,000.00 and people will still say it's overpriced.

that car could very well be worth $14,000.00. that would assume he started with a nice car without rust or major damage. it would assume some $$ put into suspension and brakes, good wiring, a clean engine compartment and undercairrage. everything works, door jambs and trunk are painted as well as the outside... lots of stuff like that which no one here can see.

for all we know it could be a shitpile with bondo an inch thick and street signs glued to the rusty floors.

I totally understand where you are coming from and thought exactly that when I started the thread. But I felt like I would get the best opinions from the HAMB so I posted anyways. And as usual the HAMB didn't disappoint.

You guys have all the details I have. I am going off of what he has told me in a few emails and the pictures you see. I am assuming, as he told me, that there is not rust, its in good shape. I haven't had a chance to call the guy yet to get any more direct questions answered yet though. Once I can go take a look at it and get it on a lift I can get more details but it is about an hour and a half away from me right now and frankly I don't want to waste the gas to go down and see it if his price is so far off the map that the guy should be committed.

From what I have gathered on here and some other sites I have sent an email to the guy with my assumptions and what I feel the value is and we will see if he tells me to fly a kite or not.

Thanks everyone for pitching in. Feel free to keep them coming.

    Thanks,
    Chad

Can I assume you're trading the '97 GMC in your sig line?

I haven't actually seen that truck, I assume it's very nice if it recieved magazine coverage. But it is going to be difficult to find a buyer for it. So a trade for this '54 Chevy might be a good way to go. I don't think people are reading about the trade, they just see the $ price and jump in.

not trying to go against the grain but if it pans out as a good car and you have the funds, then go for it. I wish my 53 had been in this good of condition.

Yes that is what the trade is for. And I agree, I am not sure people are understanding the trade aspect of it. Finding a buyer for a bagged and body dropped truck is not impossible but it is not at all easy. Like I said previously, it is a case of a situation where the opportunity presented itself. And I am thinking that I am going to be able to work out a deal. I am hoping anyway. I think I am going to go down to Tucson and check it out soon.

And for reference here is a picture of my truck.

The truck looks like it's very well built and I'm guessing has a fair amount of money spent on it. But from an investment/future resale standpoint I think there is a stong case for a trade with the '54 Chevy.

Thank you very much for the compliments. I like to think that it is built well. I built it to drive and I drive it a lot. So I would say it was very successful for me.

http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=269868 My 54 for sale in the HAMB classifieds. 350/350 with disc brakes and '75 Chevelle rearend. I've had it up for a while and haven't been real aggressive trying to sell it, so I'm open to reasonable offers if you are interested in that year model.

man the truck in the pic looks really good. I started as a mini trucker and have been converted for a few reasons. But i think you have learned you have way more $ in your truck than you will be able to get back as long as you pic the new car right close to what you like and dont have to put alot of money in it. but its all in the eye of the beholder. our style my not be the same but if you have the money to put into that car and that is what you want do it. but think of it as an investment

Sorry, I didn't see the "trade" mentioned until part-way down on the first page. I just thought you were lookin' for a '54 Chevy. Not lookin' for a trade at the moment since I've got one too many in the stable as it is.

Just thought I would update everyone. The deal fell through. He was stuck on his car being worth "more like 18K but he was sacrificing it for 14.5K". So I politely pulled out of the deal as I just wasn't willing to give him that much for the car.

    Thanks for everyones help.

    Later,
    Chad

Well I saw a picture of the trunk and while it was clean, it wasn't real impressive but there sure wasn't any money just sitting around. Maybe it was under the hood or taped to the undercarriage, who knows.
