Now I'm thinking skateboard wheels might work in a pinch.

  5. That gold metal flake steering wheel is just perfect on the mill. I've turned and machine a lot of Lucite and other plastics some 25 years ago in industrial applications. It takes patients. Or it crumbles up on you. The Green knob is great !!

you can get stainless and aluminum tubing and solid stock. Granger will sell as short as 6”.
But these marine collars could be a head start.

not an exact reproduction but close enough maybe

Never seen another . Kind of like a locket on a necklace . Id like to find one may have to make one .

  11. Along with my own shift knb creations, I've probably bought and sold hundreds of "survivor" shift knobs.
I've noted a trend of shift knobs tending to get bigger as the population has also tended to get larger than we were in the early HAMB days.
    It wouldn't bother me a bit to reproduce a 2" yoyo instead of a 1 7/8" original-size piece.

I bet that if they were actually a "store-bought" item that Mark has a collection of them.

the one I saw was or appeared to be a store bought item and was made of a plastic or some type of Bakelite type material had a rounded class Lense like a pocket watch and a wire ring to keep the glass in I think . I wish I had just bought it id .

I may try and make one some day from a old shift knop form a truck or old fork lift

    Hello,

When you select skateboard wheels, make sure the style is what you want. Straight cut edges or rounded from the mold wheels. The straight edge ones are more popular as they grip flat on any surface. The rounded edge ones are easier to use on a down the street or paved roadway as it allow the transition from one carve to the next with the rounded/smoothed edges.

The skateboard wheels come in hardness ratings. The soft units are hard to work with if you want to re-shape them. If the straight edge is soft, it may be difficult to shape to smoooth curves like a yo-yo style. The “hard” rated wheels have stiffer material compound and can be used for the grip. Some come pre-shaped with curved outer edges.

The hard edged and hardest compound wheels cut easier and can be shaped. YRMV

  23. Did a Google search for machinable plastic.
    But searched for red
    There’s green blocks. Not cheap

  24. Thanks. Got a set coming to the house.
Not sure on the hardness though. They were cheap with free shipping.
The plan is to take just enough off so they fit in the 1.25 OD collar I ordered and fit flush with the 2 inch OD. The collar is 1.99 OD. The wheels are 2.047 OD
    It’s my prototype:)

You can cast your own green ends by using products like
    Alumilite.com
Make your own mold and fill it in with resins your color or metal flake . The one thing is if you have a deep mold with high details you have to put the drying mold resins in a vacuum chamber. This help any bubbles getting trapped inside your project.
I did a few skulls ,shift knobs and dash knobs in clear but with rainbow flake. The stuff turns hard enough to tap it and use a set screw but not rock hard image.jpg
