Looking for a little help for any historians out there. Was South Penn Drag Strip the same place as York US30? I found this on the Motors Menders Car Club page: In 1954, the White Rose Timing Club started a drag strip at the Thomasville Airport. The strip was called South Penn Drag Strip until 1959, when South Penn and the Lancaster Drag Strip both closed. In 1960, the Sportsters Car Club helped the Motor Menders start the York US30 Drag-O-Way at the Thomasville Airport. Was South Penn closed and renamed York US30? Or was there another location? I know there was another airfield in York off Roosevelt Ave that closed sometime in the late 50's but I believe it was a grass strip and not paved.
Not sure about the answer to your question but I know that many drag strips had many different names over the years but they were all the same place! I have a few thousand old decals from drag strips but many were never around very long and also were not very popular. The state of PA. is an excellent example of the same drag strip having more then one name over the years has it would get sold to a new owner who simply renamed it! The person who might know the answer to your question is Darwin Doll who owned York for many years. I am not sure if he is on the HAMB or not. Best of luck in your search. Jim Hill
