Yup. Local guy here loves to ask me "How much for cash right now tonight?". I give him a number. He tries to negotiate. I repeat the number. Etc, Etc. then we agree on the price and he says, "I never bring my checkbook with me when I'm negotiating, I'll come back tomorrow and pay you". It only took once for me to remember that, and it cost him more in the future. I finally ran him off permanently a few years ago.

I was selling a brand new 454 4-bolt block a few years ago, a two piece seal block I had stored for a project that never happened. Had a guy come to see it, tried to ****er on the price, I said absolutely not because I was advertising it in 2 more places that hadn't appeared yet. He kept telling me how he couldn't find a good block like this anywhere. He came back with his "expert" who spent 2 hours of my time while they measured every bore with a snap gage and micrometer to see if they were really standard size (he was boring it 060 and stroking it, his previous motor broke a chinese crankshaft) and poring over a magazine with numbers matching up the casting numbers etc. to see what it was for sure. When done, he again offers me $200 less than the discount number I gave him before as the bottom line. When I won't take it, they got in his car and drove away. Me pissed about the wasted time. 4 days later calls and asks if I will still take the price I offered and hold it for him. I foolishly said OK. Next day I get a call from a new ad, caller says he'll pay my asking price, will be there tomorrow to pick it up; with cash.

I call goofy back and tell him the price is now the original price, and he has 3 days to pick it up. He shows, and acts pissed off. I shoulda sold it to the 2nd guy I guess, but I try to keep my word - it's a weakness when selling!

thats not really my point. i dont think anyone has a problem with anyone wanting/getting a better deal on car. i would get a good deal if i was buying a new car today, and wouldnt expect anything different from anyone else.

    my point is...
"in what manner do you get that better deal"? with honesty, intelligence, and respect for the human selling the item?

    also been since this started........
"that everyone talking about how hard it is to sell something because of the "buyer", is getting a taste of what people salespeople deal with everyday."

    and my final point is......
"you should cut the salesperson some slack the next time your on the buying end of a transaction". not to say you should pay to much...just be respectfull, know your facts, and do some homework on who you want to buy your car from!

    1. uneducated shoppers
    2. not financially sound shoppers
    3. low ball offers from shoppers
    4. treated like **** by the shoppers
    5. lied to buy the shoppers
these are the problems you guys are facing that sales people deal with everyday. dont be one of these problems when shopping for anything.

sorry for high jacking the original topic, struck a nerve that night! thanks for allowing the vent, may have prevented a nervious break down or something!

you gotta know when it comes to money there is always going to be arguments and differences of opinion.

this topic did get sideways so to try and get back to the original thought I will say when you get a low-ball offer, be polite, say no and walkaway, sooner or later someone else will come along.

    Hey Dr Herb,
Just some recent observations from s***bag used car dealers this week while my wife is looking. She is carrying a 20 pound baby in a 20 pound carrier, and not a single jerk off salesman even opened a door for her. just stared at her struggling through the door, that is...until they saw her credit and willingness to buy. She didn't buy from them.

#2. Same place, different franchise on the lot. Drove an 07 or so P***at, that the A/C clearly didn't work. Guy kept saying 'it just takes a few minutes for these new green A/Cs to spin up'. 20 minute test drive, and still not cold. she left sweating with the guy still spouting the same noise.

My point is, she is buying a car from a dealer that showed her respect, didn't upsell or bull ****, and gave her the real story, the real dope, and a fair deal. She feels comfortable with the salesman, and even though they made about 60 million 07 Accords, she wants to buy from a particular person that she trusts. 500 dollars either way matters little.

Point is, since the start of this thread, you have been putting the onus of your business on the consumer. Perhaps you should start establishing and maintaining relationships with your customers, and they will respond. You are not en***led to a sale.

Sorry for the hijack, this has been bugging me.

Wow, I read this after I posted my last thread, I was trying to help. It sounds to me like you just laid out the the play book for how to **** a customer. Make them feel bad for questioning a s***bag used car salesman? Nobody but you on this thread is talking about selling auction **** cars and spray painting the carpet. Go to usedcar****headdealer.com forum and bug those *** holes.

I think there's an art form to selling a car... you're price has to be reasonable enough to attract attention, yet still be a little more than you expect to get because you WILL get low-balled.

If resale value is a concern, then that's probably something that should have been evaluated when you bought it in the first place... as well as all along the building process as you were tallying up your costs.

Trucks seem to bring this misery into people's lives more than anything else.

wait until have you have the crooks heads emailing offering you a 10,000 certified check, and all you have to do is give them your truck and 2000.00 in cash. and you can keep the rest.

part of the problem is look at the cl***ified there filled with smaller niche cars mostly projects 4drs etc. and the poular cars havnt really came down all that much, at least what people are asking for them wether or not there getting it im not sure

hang on to it and save it for a shop truck when the 50 is done

Or simply realize that anyone can buy the exact same boxed up parts with reciepts attached for exactly what you are asking. You can either get the thing running and driving, or you can part out your stuff. No way you get full value for parts in the box, almost complete, kit truck.

  12. It's not the trucks I have a problem with, it's the non-buyers with no money or their head stuck 20, 30, 40 years in the past that I take issue with. Or the guys who think someone selling a car is running a special charity for those same broke-*** mother****ers and that I should be glad I don't have to pay the guy to take the car away. The more of them I deal with the more I'm going to enjoy s****ping some of this stuff one of these days. And I'm not alone, I know plenty of other guys who've gotten to the same point that they enjoy trashing the stuff when they can't sell it. One guy I know sells stuff at the swaps where everything is a dollar - a dollar - and still ends up bringing things home - which goes to the dump never to be seen again.

Yes, there are curb sitters out there. I have a couple of 67-72 trucks I was trying to sell real cheap on another site. I sold the stuff a couple of times but no money ever changed hands. Lost a couple of sales because of these folks too. I have since received a deposit so hopefully this deal will go through. I don't tell folks I'll junk it before I give it to them. I just tell them no thanks, I think some of them low ball you just to see if they can get a rise out of you. I've even had to tell a couple of folks they were wasting my time just to get rid of them. Why do people do that? It is ok to make an offer, just be fair. You will never see me trash someones stuff neither. That makes you look bad. Go figure!
