Here on the rez you might find just about anything under the hood especially on older pickups. One of my students drove a 53 (and most likely still has it) Chev pickup with a 390 Ford stuffed in it in the 80's daily to school.
One afternoon in the mid 80's my buddy drug a mid 60's Chev pickup in my yard that someone had given him that had a knock in it. Engine was a 350R out of a 72 Olds complete with turbo 350 and three loose torque converter bolts. A drive around the block to confirm that the engine and trans worked right and four hours later the engine and trans were setting in my 51 Merc where they worked great for about 60K miles.
There is a 500 Cad waiting to go in my 71 GMC 3/4 out in the garage so I can tow a bit easier and hopefully get better fuel mileage.

Ya..my bro and I acquired a dune buggy equipped with a flat head v8...and the motor was in the rear of the buggy!!! still got the welded/converted/homebuilt rear end that runs off the crank of the motor!!!

  3. I was working at a small town newspaper years ago and an itinerant grinder came by in an old early '50s Ford panel truck. In the back he had his sharpening wheels and grinders, all rigged to a power takeoff he had fabricated that tied into - get this - a Chrysler Marine diesel slant six! I didn't even know Chrysler made diesel slant sixes. He said he logged 100,000 miles a year on the truck, lived out of it on the road and wanted to show me every aspect of the Rube Goldberg system of belts and gears he used to run the grinders.

One off the wall swap was one I did about 20 years ago; GMC V-6, not one of those wheezin' car V-Sucks, but the TRUCK engine; this particular one was a 351 c.i., came out of a '66 1/2 ton, (Yes they put them in pick-ups, this one even had a Power-Glide behind it), the kid that owned it was our parts-runner; it kept running badly and seemed to be getting worse, he put quite a bit of money in it, even an adaptor and a 500 cfm Holley 2-barrel, nothing helped, he yanked it, swapped in a Chev-V-8, gave this Jimmy engine to me, I looked it over, hell all that was wrong was the points had closed up!! (Younger readers check threads for "points and condensers", I don't have time to 'splain it)!, LOL, I had a '35 International Ton and a half truck, plan was to make a car hauler, motor fit in real nice, I found a 4-speed truck trans; but those are a heavy devil, they have a neat sound, not the wheezin' high-pitched irritating stuff the little cars make, but a mellow deep, almost reminiscent of a Harley, never finished it, grouchy bride and all, she left, I still miss that truck; "Thank God and Greyhound you're gone"!! LOL!!

I've seen others scratch their heads when I popped the hood on my car, which in turn made me scratch my head again... Or then again, maybe the guy just had a bad case of the cooties and they 'jumped ship'? :D

Yes I did. Saw an off topic 66 Chevy Caprice at a car show. It seemed to be either an extreemly well preserved original or a total restoration. Not my thing but a beautiful car! Walked around and looked under the hood and there was a stock 350 Buick engine. The instalation was awful. The engine set at an awkward angle of about 25 to 30 degrees nose up, I guess to miss the front cross member. I wanted to ask why he'd put a Buick in there but he was so proud of his ride I couldn't burst his bubble. I just shrugged and walked away.

I bought a 63 cj3b jeep. it had a legitimate corvette 327 in it with a turbocharger on top. Backed by a truck four speed, with the granny gear. That fucker would granade tranfer cases. Pulled the turbo and sold the jeep after playing with it for a while. Wish i would have pulled the motor. My buddys dad that bought the jeep constantly bugs me for the turbo.

  14. Bought a 49 Jeep wagon that had a 200 ford 6/automatic...replaced it with a chevy 301.
Bought a buddy's 79 ford shortbox that had a 400 Pontiac engine, trans am subframe 350 turbo and GTO 12 bolt...Loved that truck.
My lil' bro [Jangleguy here in the HAMB] and I built his 61 Morris Minor with a 406 chevy/powerglide

Back when I was a pup I helped a friend trailer a '55 chevy cameo truck home from an estate auction where he'd bought it for next to nothing. When we popped the hood open we found a 421 Pontiac tri-power :D

it's a wonder we didn't get killed in that damn thing

66 International Travelall with a V-6 GMC Diesel in it. Setup looked great except for the PVC pipe and duct tape used between one air cleaner and the two intake manifolds. Hard to explain, just Google it.

Mid to late 60s 350 Chevy in a 56 Chevy 3100 shortbed stepside, motor mounts were for a car, but butchered up with a torch to fit the truck. 1/4 inch stell plate helped adapt the mount to the truck frame. No bushings. Extra holes for no apparent reason cut into crossmember below engine. I replaced the entire frame with a chopped down frame from an 81 3/4 ton Suburban. Drove from Albuquerque to El Paso with no problem. Motor froze twice in El Paso.

couple of years ago i put a good running chevy inline 6 in a 85 ford ranger that had a dead v-6, just because i had the motor and didnt want to put much money in the truck to get it running. it took considerable creative BFH work and looked like i used a shoehorn to get it in but it ran suprisingly well.

  25. I'm guilty as hell on this one. Bought a 70 Impala from a co worker for $150.00, he said it was a 350 and it ran. I needed an engine for my 77 Buick Skylark. The deal was made site un seen, I drove an hour to get to his place, there sat this god awful Impala with salmon pictures all over it, and the vinyl top peeling off. I was embarassed to take it home so I hide it behind the company shops in Seattle. A few days later I popped the hood, wiped the dust off the air cleaner only to reveal 300 h.p. 350 cu. in. scratched my head real good and got the motor's manual out, to my surprise it was a 10.25 compression ratio 300 h.p. 350 cid. I put it into my Skylark, ran some good aviation gas thru it and was amazed at the power it had. That was one nice engine.

A buddy of mine, Travis, used to race four cylinder trucks on at local dirt track, kicked ass every weekend. The "tech guy" was related to a few of the other racers and was always saying Travis was "cheat'in sum damn ways". Travis is a heating and air guy so he came up with some crazy looking electrical part off some air conditioner or something. He fabbed up a nice bracket for it on the firewall and ran wires all over that truck, to EVERYTHING, shocks, water pump, brakes, you name it, there was a few wires running to it. That dumb ass "tech guy" had a fit when he saw that. He swore up and down it was some onboard NASCAR system and was going to have the truck banned. The whole time he was standing there pointing and hollaring up a storm, everyone else was standing there scratching their heads wondering just what in the hell was actually going on. Guess you had to be there, but it was funny as hell at the time!

did this same thing to a ford ranger pickup i had. the v-6 spun a bearing and i didnt have money to buy an engine but i did have a good running chevy 250 inline and th 350. after the shotgun wedding with its requisite 4lb. hammer work it was done and was actually a great driving and running truck. the engine looked like i put it in with a shoe horn though:D

You bet! Bought a '57 Chev Carryall back in the late 70's. Sitting alongside the road in a guy's frontyard with a sign on the windshield that said, "$350 OBO". Stopped to look because I love them, and it was super straight.
Big surprise was when I popped the hood and saw a 389 Poncho with tri power, and a TH400 in the old Chevy! I didn't even make the OBO, it was just too much truck for the money!
