Just when you have decided to upgrade your traditional hot rod along comes big brother to change all that ;)

In what could be the state’s first step in limiting custom wheel and hubcap options for motor vehicle enthusiasts, legislation that would prohibit the operation of motor vehicles equipped with spinner hubcaps has been reintroduced in the New York State Legislature. The SEMA-opposed bill would subject vehicle owners to fines of up to $750 for a third or subsequent violation. The measure also ignores the fact that custom wheels are not prohibited by Federal law; manufacturers are required to notify the federal government of a safety problem or defect related to motor vehicle equipment within five days of becoming aware of such an issue; and that spinner hubcaps have no proven detrimental effect on motor vehicle safety.

  2. Well, sounds like it's time for Hillary to step up.
Yes, I know she's not in the NY senate but, she's glommed on to lamer issues for votes.
    Write her a letter.

    I hate politics.
the older i get the more I despise politicians.
Man, fuelpump dont get me started...
Bottom line..... I wonder how many people have died as a result of spinner hubcaps totally??? Not just in that state.
I was asked to help out in my small village in a planning committee to finally put together a responsible, common sense aproach to finally some good changes to our communty that have been ignored since the villages inception. We spent a whole year going back and forth with the council on changes and repairs to this document.
Finally at the end of the year it was ready for final vote....
Turned down because it had wording prohibiting adult oriented business's from moving into the main part of town (they didnt want anything refering to pornography on paper). And another councilman wanted his specific wording in it that refered to a 'living museum"
Give me a fucking break! Shoot them all..
People spend too much time worrying how others should live.
Sorry but I had to vent......

  5. I'd love to see the enginering safety evaluation used to justify this crap.....Unless they are referring to those pain the ass, blind you twelve times "Spinning" hubcaps. That could go federal and just tack it onto the same legislation that keeps chrome off new car dashboards.

  6. Ralph Nader all over again! Don't these people have anything better to do? Like improve the roads, lower taxes, bite my a$$?

The theory, I think, behind this is that if you approach a car with spinners at an intersection, for a split second they give the impression that they are going to move through the intersection and you might hit the brake in response. Here in Tucson anyway, we have such a high amount of red light runners that I can see this being a problem.
I don't really agree with more laws, 'cause then it never ends.........

I hate those spinning hubcaps anyway, and I have not seen a whole lot of rods with them on. Now as far as regulation goes anyone from NY should already know this state will be the first to screw you out of anything they can get away with. I'll wait for a bigger issue to start a fight with NY, so far they haven't bothered my Hot Rod and a couple of cops have even given me a break because of it.

  10. Somebody must've gotten hurt when one flew off. I would think that a 24" chunk of pointy, spinning aluminum would do some bodily harm.

Could've also been a dumb kid sticking his finger in a still spinning one in a parking lot.

Spinner (spinning) wheels/hubcaps, NOT traditional type "spinner" center caps!! That makes a big difference. My first thought (this being the HAMB) was the traditional three point spinner center caps also. I'm like WTF -- how could those possibly be dangerous???

The new style spinning wheels/hubcaps could be -- the illusion of still moving (if you're only watching the wheels??) or one coming off (has this ever actually happened??) could be a problem. I don't buy the illusion of movement -- over 50% of the tire/wheel (or hubcap) combination is still, and should be obvious even at a casual glance. Pay attention to yur driving idiot!!

Now if a cheapo bearing and shaft has let go in a documented instance (other than a crash -- you expect parts to fly off then!), I can understand some concern. I mean I'd be pissed if some stray spinner came off the donker next to me and scratched the paint on my car or hit me! you might have to call the cops for sure, but not to write the other guy a ticket... Call an ambulance while you're at it -- one of us might need it!

I drive my semi-rod every day, have done so for 20 years (not the same one). I've been involved in a couple fender benders, some my fault, most not. If ya gonna drive it all the time it's gonna happen! The only time I got upset to the point I thought I might do something is when a guy hit and totaled my car, then accused ME of being in the wrong (when I obviously wasn't). All I did was tell him he needed to stay the F on his side of the road! Luckily, he did. The cops came shortly after. Five around my car, one over talking to him. I commented on it to one of the cops. "Man, if that was my car, I'd be ready to kick someone's a**." They wanted to make sure I stayed on MY side of the road!!

Oh yeah, this was in Mississippi, and it's leagal to carry a gun in your car (discourages car jackers... none in MS that I know of, quite a few in Florida... wonder why?). I had a gun rug in my hand right after telling the fellow to stay on his side of the road. All zipped up, never showed it to anyone, just got it out of the car because a lot of people were standing around it. Of course I told the cops, they didn't care. But that more explains all the cops around me...

Your right about that, but NY makes too much money off the car hobby, I don't think this issue will go very far. Who knows didn't they outlaw hubcaps with the fake knock off ears in the 60's, the reason was if a car hit a person the hub cap would cut up their body, still have the real knock offs on my MGA and I never had a problem, so your most likely right.

I don't care for any more laws...they have so many now they can't enforce them..however...I don't know anybody who gives a shit if spinners are around or not. Every time I see them I think of the worthless piece of shit that's driving the vehicle. I had one guy brag to me about how he bought $6000 worth of tires and wheels with his income tax return check. The guy doesn't even work but our fucking government gives him $6000 for wheels...just great...well I've got a JOB to do so I can pay my taxes...so the government can give it to....Ah shit...who cares!

Do you have the legislation/bill number?

  22. So they can yammer on the damned phone all they want, watch videos while they drive with the stereo makeing more racket than the Pusher with the headers uncapped, but they can't have spinnahs. Next thing they'll outlaw goad (gold) and no body will have a grill. Damn the luck.

Maybe since "racial profiling" isn't allowed....this would be a good way for the Police to have a legitimate reason to pull-over many of the "gangstas". Write them up for the wheels, bust them for whatever else they have that's illegal!

I personally don't care...if it's written specifically enough to outlaw just the "spinning" type spinners. The problem is, are the lawmakers smart enough to write the law correctly?

  26. Aren't they supposed to cool the brakes while doin' all that pimpin' in city traffic?:D  :D Those things are REALLY stupid, especially the K Mart knock-offs.

Stevie G...Hillary IS in the Senate. Total Carpetbagger. She was just re-elected by the Idiots in this state. They had to be brain dead if they did not know she was going to run for President on NY's dime. These politicians she have to resign to try for another office. Before that she was on her " Book Tour " I could go on and on

The reason this IS important, is because if this is enacted you have just given up a little bit more freedom to do what you want to with your own vehicle/property. Yeah, the high buck spinners are one of the more idiotic products going, but, as far as I know, are a reasonably, well engineered product. GAWD-AWFUL-STUPID, but safe. Now, if we were talking about a product that was a safety hazard for the general population, I could see concern in regards to outlawing it. This is nothing more than a BAD TASTE product and as far as I know, that is not and should not be against the law.

Don't be passive about our rights.

Gotta agree, the State of New York mustuv solved everyone's problems to even bother with spinners. Do-gooders just won't leave you alone.

A kid in my town put spinners on his new 2005 Mustang GT. Now, that should be illegal!
