Mike I used VW Bus boxes, and the left side tires were a little light. The Dragster was at Fremont ( I am certain you were there) that was my first time @ 180, and the chute didn't open, so it felt like I was flyin !

I am especially liking all the "on track" action photos, be they drag, LSR, or road course. Beautiful

Check out the hubcap reflection IMG_1217.jpg . You can see the camera girl who took the pic riding on the back of the harley when they passed us. Great pic, Carmen!

    Is this "action" enough?

    Hello,

From the time my brother sold his (our Model A coupe) cars to friends, he came home in a nice, shiny black 1958 Chevy Impala. It was an instant fast car with a 280 hp 348 c.i. motor. He showed it to me on a “around the block” ride. I was too young to drive legally, but became the maintenance guy like I was for his 51 oldsmobile sedan, earlier.

But, in 1959, I had already driven the Impala by myself plenty of times around the block and beyond during my detailing/washing jobs. I had to go around the block to get all of the water out of the weep holes under the doors and body. So, I had free time to drive anywhere. And, anywhere is where I went, by myself.

At the drags, my brother was the main driver from late 57 when new to 1959, when we were in our last stages of stock car class racing. I was the main maintenance guy changing tires, spark plugs, capping/uncapping the exhaust outlets and making sure the car was ready for the next round. Then, I ran over to the chain link fence to film my brother in single timing runs or elimination races.

He was the main guy on the films for the 58 Impala as he was the owner. In our film preview days the following week at our house, I was criticized for taking so many action shots of the 58 Impala. But, that was part of my duties at Lion’s Dragstrip. filming the action whatever class showed up while I had the movie camera in hand.

What about me driving and racing the 58 Impala? In our last year of competition in late 1959, my brother allowed me to race in the eliminations. He allowed me to run a time trial run with Bruce Slicks on, in another week.

1958 Impala at Lion’s Dragstrip 3:06 Chevy Impala silver rims racing in class eliminations at age 15. Behind at start, but won both races in a comeback at the finish.
Elimination race one: vs 59 Pontiac vs 57 Ford
upload_2023-8-5_3-4-53.png The slow reaction of the anticipation of the start of eliminations was overwhelming. The Pontiac got a jump and held it most of the way. then finally, i caught him at the finish line.
    Elimination race 2:

The 57 Buick driver was a seasoned veteran of So Cal drag racing and was a very good racer. The fast Buick got a good jump on me, but, I caught him in time to finish first, barely.

    Note:

Me, racing the 58 Impala with Bruce Slicks in the early fall of 1959. My brother ran several times and got a good E.T. Then I was allowed to race a couple of times with the slicks on and got a time that was better than his top E.T. so far. 14.68 to his 14.80 secs.
