Does anyone have experience with the roadster or coupe from Zipper Motors. I am going out to meet Jeremy in a week. Looking at building one of their coupes. Build will be street rod with vintage sprint styling. Thanks...Kevin
Do a search and you'll find plenty. Was a great product when Daryl Zip still owned it. If they have upheld his standards, you can't go wrong.
I have the #2 Zipper built about 11 years ago. Recently I had to get some friction shock medium and Jeremy responded with the right stuff in less than a week.
The Palmers from UT bought the company from Daryl within the last couple of years I believe. Still around and Jeremy still talks with him regularly.
He's still in Grand Junction fooling around with H-D's and building banjos. One of the most talented guys I've ever met and one hell of a problem solver.
I bought mine when Darryl Zipp still owned it. As already stated, if the new owner(s) have kept up on quality, even 80%, you'll get a great product.
Always admired Daryl's products even though I'm not much of a fibergl*** guy (Corvettes being the exception). He always seemed to be a guy that "got it done" as opposed to one that "talked about it". Frank
Thanks for all the replies everyone. I'll take lots of pictures while I am out in UT next week. That way everyone can get a preview and see the latest from Zipper Motors. Kevin
Thanks!-------Glad to hear he's still doing cars. I first met Daryl when he had just left Matell toys & went to work for Magoo's street rods in early 70's. He had a '35 coupe at that time & was also into "Bluegr*** music". Then he moved to Colorado & started the T Zipper in the 80's. Yep, he's quite a talented & neat guy! Any of you that happen to see him, tell him hi from Don/Bev Thomas---L.A.Roadsters
Kevin; Daryl is a genius and I hope the reputation for this package continues. If you decide to go with it, I hope you have as much fun with yours as I have had with mine! All the best, Ron
Darrell Zipp is an amazing craftsman.... I started my Track T project(8 yrs ago..!!) with one of his frames... He's still up to his old tricks, but check this link out...Ya might know he'd figure out a way to hot-rod a bluegr*** mandolin...Carbon Fiber ,no less..!!! http://zippertone.com/
Darrell is still around and kicking, yes, building his spyders, and some crazy carbon fiber mandolins. He is moving to arizona though, if not already there. I worked for him the last year he was in business with the roadsters and such, he trained the palmers on his methods and i'm quite sure that he wouldnt have let the company go over to them if they didnt learn it right. if you have any questions about building the cars or particulars of them drop me a pm and ill be glad to tell you anything i can about them. I can say with no hesitation darrell builds a hell of a product and in the year i spent working for him i learned more than i had in 20 years everywhere else.
Give a door a good fling to open it and a slam to shut. That will tell if they build as good as the ones Darrell did. I'm sure anyone who owns one or talked to Darrell much will know what I mean.
Wow. What a great place. Someone who has actually worked with the designer and several owners. Gearhead, thanks for the offer for help. I will probably take you up on it soon. I am flying out to UT on Monday to meet the Palmer's. Jeremy and I will be working out the details on a coupe. I'll keep everyone posted. Kevin
You should hear the mandolin in person. It SCREAMS when plugged in. The sound is so crisp abd fast. Oh yeah and just because zipper is how he is he knows that you can tune it. Play it put it in the freezing cold and or in the oven and play again and it's still in tune because the cf doesn't expand or contract much. He holds a patent on the tungsten carbide frets. Just try to wear them ****ers out. Oh yeah. If I sound p***ionate about his stuff it's because I am. I'd consider the guy a second father. "working" for him was amazing.
Cool, Carla is a professional musician. We have a ton of instruments in our house. I have always noodled around on guitar, was proficient with the Trumpet but lacked the music gene. I bought her a mandolin for Christmas one year. love the sound. Darrells stuff is just over the top. WOW!
Daryl Zip just finished rebuilding a roadster for Neal East. It was called the Rocky Mountain Low and Neal crashed it about 5 years ago and Zip just finished the rebuild a couple months ago. Hopefully pics will surface soon.
One of the coolest modifieds ever! We have discussed it several times here. Looking forward to pictures myself!
Hmmm, maybe I should stop by Neal's house one of these days and snap a few pics?? He lives real close to me.
Give me a bit,, I'll put up some new pics of RML this afternoon. I'm quite proud of that car after having a major hand in building the headers for it.
OK, got out of cl*** early. Lots of changes on RML, front and rear suspension are different, body is different (slightly) motor is the same, and the new trunk turtle deck. I did a lot on the headers and helped with designing the turtle deck. Under the deck is amazing all the detail darrell put in, even though it can't be seen. I didnt get photos of the trailer, but there is also a trailer now for neil to put some luggage in, and it is a work of art too. Here are some pics, I put a bunch more car pics and mandolin pics in a folder in my profile if anyone wants to look
