I am installing the zips riser and I can't get the coolant plug out of my passenger head of my 327 for the bypass hose (engine has not been apart since assembled in '68) Has anyone had luck plugging the bypass or just running the hose back to a plug in the intake ?
I ran mine to the back plug in the head. But, I'm curious to what others have done. I don't see why you couldn't run it to the manifold...I would guess if you plugged it, you might want to drill an 1/8" hole in the thermostat. I've run V8 pumps with nothing but the main "in and out" hooked up, and a hole in the thermostat, and had zero problems.
When Useing a Zipps , MAKE shore you get ALL the air out of the Engine block , Mine keep Going between 180 to 240 after a 30 mint drive , with medical fan , Fan shroud, I did all the little tricks , air bleed in the top of the water pump housing ,3 or 4 Thermostat with small hole (.050 hole ,by pass hose block to pump , ( no heater) different pulley sizes , !!! still the same Problem, drove me Nut's !!! So I took it apart Like the 7th time , I pulled the thermostat out , Fill the block all the way up to thermostat , let set over night abou 5 hrs, I had to refill again, about 1 to 2 qts , then installed thermostat , Then topped radiator off , started let it warm up !Bled the air screw at the pump , Now it says @ 190 all day long even when it's 100 out sides , My set up is a 1930 ford with a cheap Ebay aluminum radiator , with a 327 /365 30 over , I run about 17 initial timing @ 1000 RPM ((with a Vega converter , )) total 37 deg. 10 pound Cap
Well I got it all installed, did not use a bypass hose I just capped the outlet on water pump. I did install a new 180 thermostat with a couple 1/8 holes drilled to make sure no air got trapped. So far drove the car tonight about 15 miles, it was 80 degrees out. As high as the temp went was 160
Well today I went to a cruise in, left the house it was about 50 outside had to drive about 30 miles and the car temp got up to 160. On the way home it was 89 and it got up to 180 and then when I got home I let it sit in the driveway idling in the sun for about 20 more mins and it did get up to 190 on the gauge (sender in in rear of intake manifold) although with my infer red gun the highest temp on the engine I could find was 178 on the head. Sounds like maybe a new therm with only one small hole ?
No. You are experiencing normal operating temperatures, if even a bit low. Normal temperatures can be 190-215°, depending on conditions.
Sounds like a winter project to me. I'd just drive it the way it is for the remainder of the summer. Feel like posting a few photo's???
