OK, I have a question that someone here most likely has the answer to. Has anyone heard the same engine run with zoomies as well as with headers having collectors? Next question: How were the idle characteristics (lope from hi-perf camshaft) affected? Enhanced/reduced/pretty much the same? Last question: What options are there for (temporarily) baffling/quieting the zoomies for street use. I don't mind loud pipes at all, but unfortunately johnny law does... Engine is a blueprinted 440 with 10.7:1 CR and 284/.528 MP solid lifter camshaft. I recorded a MPEG of the sound but its about 350KB, too big to attach here.
Well, it's easier for someone to piss into a set of zoomie tubes...but the plus side is that you can always fire the motor up if ya catch 'em in the act!!! (oh yeah...Harley baffles will quiet them down a pinch...but not much!)
Oh yeah, a baffle in each of the 8 zoomies should make it a little quieter than one baffle in a collector. I'm a bit worried about using the rewarder collector mufflers on a set of fenderwells behind my blown engine, but whatever.
Probably not exactly what your looking for, but, years ago I ran a small block Mopar on a circle track. One of those low buck classes. Mid way through the year the track decided we could run headers instead of the cast iron exhaust. All I had was a nasty rusty set of B body headers and we were running an A body. I took the sawzall and hacked off the headers so the tubes were pointing at the ground. First time we went to the track and fired that thing up, it was real easy to hear the non-stock cam, same cam as we had the week before (Mopar 510 lift 294 duration). (rules violation) OOPS.. Wouldn't let us run! Sounded great though. The next week we put on a set of collector headers and told them we changed the cam (we didn't) they let us run. Our small block sounded a whole lot meaner through the zoomies then through the collector headers. Gene
Not sure if you these are still available. I saw this settup on John Coute's 32 Roadster back in 96 at NSRA Columbus and was blown away. Shortly after there was a company advertising this settup in Street Rodder mag. The zoomies are setup so that you can run them open or with the pull of lever you can run a full exhaust. If you look really closely at the section of silver tube that connects the flange to the valve setup, they have a second set of tubes that dump downward and tie into the full ehxhaust.
